Safe City Driving Tips

Most people encounter two types of driving: city streets and highways. Each circumstance comes with its own set of hazards. The more aware you are of hazards you may encounter while driving; the better equipped you will be to drive safely at all times. With numbers of annual fatalities from vehicle collisions topping 55,000 in the United States alone, safe driving habits are a must.

One issue that people are learning more about right now is red light cameras. Cities all over the United States are realizing that red light cameras and speed cameras are huge revenue makers, and drivers are finding that these devices are becoming more prevalent in areas where they drive regularly. To stay up to date, you may want to consider adding a radar detector like the Escort 9500ix to your car.

For city driving, there isn’t much else out there that is better than the Escort 9500ix. The reason why is that this camera locating radar detector is an easy to install windshield mount detector that uses “artificial intelligence” to make it a fully automatic radar and laser detector. The unit learns as you drive. However, you can also update the database of red light and speed cameras right through your PC.

The Escort 9500ix is perfect for city driving. Other radar detectors, such as the Escort QI45, are better for highway driving. The Escort QI45 is an installed unit that is easy enough to install yourself. While the Escort QI45 does not have the database of red light and fixed position cameras, it features long range protection against speed detectors used by law enforcement.

When driving city streets, there is more to contend with even though the speed at which you travel is slower. Because of the slower rate of speed, many people think that city driving is automatically safer. This is not the case; because if you are not paying close attention on city streets, you forget about red light, stop signs, cars pulling out and pedestrians; all of which can cause a nasty accident.

In busy cities, the numbers relating to people running red lights tops 100,000 times per day! That’s a lot of red lights being run. When you see numbers like this, you can understand why cities are installing red light cameras at so many intersections. But why wait for a hefty ticket to learn to stop for red lights?

Slowing and stopping at red is not only important to avoid a ticket. What happens at intersections is typically that one driver will try to make it through a red light, while another driver gets their green light to go. The two cars then collide at a 90-degree angle in a “T-bone” crash. These crashes are oftentimes fatal, because seatbelts and air bags do not protect at such an angle. When you consider that speeds in an intersection are up to 50mph, you can see why it is so important to pay close attention to changing lights.

For the ultimate in safe city driving, awareness is key. Do everything you can to keep your attention on the road, scanning at intersections even when you have a green light. Paying more attention to your food, your music, or your makeup is a surefire way to end up a statistic.
